GMTK Game Jam 2024 Entry
Welcome to Beta Version, our entry for the GMTK Game Jam 2024! We made it in 4 days to fit the theme "Built to Scale".
In Beta Version, you step into the role of a routesetter, responsible for designing boulders that our climbers will attempt to "scale." But there’s a catch—these climbers aren’t just built to scale the walls; they’re built—as in, muscular and powerful, but with varied shapes, sizes, limb proportions and available stamina (not implemented). But while each of them is a powerhouse, they have godawful technique. Your goal is to create boulders that are challenging yet achievable for all of them, despite their differences.
Gameplay Overview:
- Build Phase: Use the holds in your inventory to craft the ideal boulder problem on the gym wall. Your goal is to strike the perfect balance between difficulty and accessibility for climbers of all shapes and sizes.
- Beta Test Phase: Once your boulder is set, it's time to test it! Help our climbers attempt to navigate and top your creation. Will their limbs reach? Will their stamina hold out? If you can get every given climber to top the boulder, the level is complete!
Scoring:
(not implemented)
- Efficiency: Score points based on how many holds you left unused.
- Stamina: Earn higher scores by pushing climbers to their limits without exhausting them.
Why "Beta Version"?
We named our game Beta Version as a nod to both climbing "beta"—the strategies climbers use to solve routes—and the fact that this game is a rough, unpolished prototype. It’s a broken prototype in every sense, but it's our broken prototype, that we poured lots of snacks, coffee, and one precious vacation day into.

- A fun, challenging balance between creativity and strategy in designing boulders.
- A quirky, light-hearted game that captures the spirit of climbing with more or less realistic movements.

His climbing technique is, shall we say, unorthodox, but he's got the spirit
